The monastery on its hill dominated Route 6 to Rome (see 0385), and Mark Clark’s Fifth Army was held up for several months in its advance on Rome. Four major assaults were made between Jan and May 1944 before the Poles hoisted their red and white flag over the monastery on May 18.
