The station was opened in 1940 and was used for the storage, assembly, maintenance and repair of aircraft throughout the war. Hurricanes were assembled at the station during the Battle of Britain and naval aircraft and gliders assembled later in the war. RAF hospital Wroughton was also located on the site.
