She saw the American troops sweep through the town as they advanced at the end of the war and also recalled when a British flyer was captured nearby. A released Polish prisoner threatened her mother with guns when they were trying to steal wine from the cellar. At the end of the war when only about ten years of age she was shown the films of concentration camps which affected her for the rest of her life.

Elizabeth helped count ration coupons and remembers the strict warnings about butterfly bombs: 'Don’t pick up anything in the street. Not even a matchstick.' She describes the presence of Russian POWs in Cleethorpes, their polite demeanour, and their fear of returning home. Food was basic but sufficient, with homegrown vegetables and fruit.
